The term ‘Solfège’ is French

France has a strong tradition of music theory education, with detailed curricula tailored to various skill levels. This education is practical, designed to develop musical expression and is always geared towards actual music activities.

For example, ear training, which is part of Solfège and common in Japan as well, includes a wider variety of scales in France, not limited to major and minor scales, fostering a broader sense of pitch. The instruments used for ear training include not just the commonly used piano, but also other instruments helping students sharpen their pitch and develop sensitivity to different timbres. Additionally, it is common to practice ear training with actual pieces from orchestras. In harmony exercises, students learn not only whether the harmonies are theoretically correct but also how to arrange and connect sounds to express music effectively.

In France, a new name was given to modern Solfège education: Formation musicale. However, the term “Solfège” is still widely used in practice in France. Since the term is also more familiar in Japan, MonLasol will continue to use “Solfège” consistently.
